Start right now to think about the areas in which you want to make change and move forward. Is there something specific you'd like to do or have in the next six to twelve months? This could be a career goal, a project, something around relationships, resilience or well-being. It could be about eating, exercise, or bringing some sort of mindfulness into your life. It could be completing your MBA or running the New York marathon or it might just be that you want to have more energy. There are myriad things you might want, and whatever it is – mental, physical or emotional – we’re about to help you get it.
#1- Get clear about what you want
The first important thing to note is that it’s not about what you don't want. You need to make a clear and positive statement about what you want to achieve because this is an inclusive universe. When you say, ‘I don't want to feel miserable anymore,’ or ‘I don't want to feel overworked,’ you’ll get what you focus on, so be really clear on affirming what is it that you want rather than what you don’t want.
Tip: The SMART acronym we use for objective setting is really useful to bring into play here. Ask yourself, ‘Is it specific, is it measurable, is it achievable, is it relevant, does it have a time frame attached to it?’ If you can apply these criteria to your statement then it will be crystal clear. (Or email us your statement and if it's not crystal clear, we’ll help you clarify it.)
#2 - How will I know when I’ve achieved it?
What’s your measure of success? Can you clock that five kilometre run? Can you stand on the scales and see that number has dropped? Did you get a compliment from your boss/that promotion you've wanted for ages/win great feedback from a stakeholder you’ve had difficulty with? Perhaps you’ll have achieved it when you’ve finally completed your resume and sent it out to five people. Or when you’ve overcome your fear and gone to a networking event. There are lots of ways to measure whether or not you've achieved something. Describe how you’ll know when you’ve achieved the goal you set in step #1.
#3 - How will it feel?
This is extremely important because your physiology needs to understand what it will feel like when you achieve your goal. It's like this is the big ‘Why’; the real reason behind what you’re striving for. The reason we do most things is because it's going to make us feel good. So, what is that feeling? Can you describe it? Are you going to feel lighter, clearer, happier, more at ease, more fulfilled? Define how achieving your goal as set out in step #1 will feel for you.
#4 - Practise that feeling state
Once you've written down what those feelings feel like, start practising that feeling state first thing in the morning. The closer you can embody that feeling state, the more likely your body is to take you in the direction you want to go. The beauty of being human is that we have this fantastic thing called imagination. Use your imagination and try, even if you're not feeling anything like it right now, to feel just a little bit closer to that feeling state you’re seeking. The more you imagine yourself feeling that feeling, the easier it will be to embody it for real.
#5 - Get in touch with us
We want you to email us and tell us what it is that you want. We promise to respond to you individually. It’s a big commitment from us, but it's those who really want to make changes that we really want to help. And don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be a big goal or commitment from you.
